Sol

Supposedly it is Sunshine Saturday today on the 3rd of January 2026. What it means it that it’s allegedly the most popular day of the year for holidaymakers in the UK to book a trip abroad. . At least it seems like a much more positive spin, right?

I remember during early 2025 when I was starting to explore using LLMs to build things in anger (really, it was mostly joy). I had a few ideas here or there rattling around my head. But I think particularly one of the real downsides last year was a number of anticyclones here in Blighty. So just periods of high pressure where stable air is trapping moisture and low level clouds. It just meant we had constant and persistent grey skies, which for me, I’m sure many others, is not a particularly fun thing and started to get me down.

One of the ideas that popped into my head I had was that I just want to be able to find, in a couple of taps or clicks, where can I get to first lot of sunshine either now or in the next few days or next week. Maybe even the week after that a real push, but how do I find last minute sunshine? And whether that’s somewhere in the UK, whether that’s somewhere on a short haul flight, maybe even long haul push. But ideally something you could, whether by plane train or automobile, maybe even a boat, you could find sunshine and get guaranteed weather based on short term weather forecasts.

This is where the idea for Sol came up - your last minute Sunshine finder. I’m going to run a little bit of experiment with myself over the next couple of weeks. So between Sunshine Saturday (3rd Jan 2026) and Blue Monday (19th Jan 2026), we’re going to see if we can get a version of Sol out into public domain. And very importantly, see if I can get some last minute winter sun using it.
